The Basics

Who is able to pick your child up from school? (Think about something realistic.  In an emergency your best friend from San Jose will not be able to make it to school quickly.  Maybe try your neighbor or your child’s friend’s parent).

If something happens at home or in the area (earthquake, fire, etc.), do you have an emergency kit somewhere in your house that is easily accessible and has things you may need for any situation?

Who can the whole family call (out of state) that can be reliable? In most cases, you will not be able to call local numbers. This is because a large number of people will be calling local number and

 the lines may be damaged.

Where can the family meet during an emergency? (Everyone might be at different places during the day and if there is an emergency, you should have a family meeting spot to ensure everyone is safe).

If your child is at home alone during an emergency, whose house can they go to? (It should be someone close by; like a neighbor.  Think about a neighbor who is home most of the day. An adult would be preferable because they could better protect your child.)
